All-Stars, Jaguars register wins to move up in Elite Basketball League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Catherine Hall All-Stars and Granville Jaguars scored solid wins at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Saturday to increase their lead in the Western Basketball Association iCool/iDrade Elite Basketball League as the regular season winds to a close.
Defending champions Catherine Hall beat Holland Saints 93-86 to stay in the lead with 38 points from 20 games, four points more than Granville Jaguars who beat Muschett Falcons 94-70 to avenge one of their two losses.
In another match, Lucea Flames defeated Inner-city Avalanche 56-47.
Despite the loss, Holland Saints are still in third place on 30 points and are two points away from securing a place in the semi-finals joining Catherine Hall and Granville, while MoBay Hoopers and Cricket Club Knights are battling for the other semi-final spot.
Granville Jaguars’ Dave Black scored 35 points to lead all scorers with a barrage of three-point shot in the second half against an undermanned Falcons team that had just two substitutes on the bench.
Four other players all scored in double figures as Otis Foster had 14 points and 14 rebounds; Tafari Vassell scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds; Leroy Lawrence scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds; while Levar Rose scored 12 points and had 18 assists and eight steals.
Aston Billings was outstanding for Falcons with 24 points and 12 rebounds; Jermaine Allwood scored 19 points as well as nine rebounds; Kashwayne Simms scored 11 points, while Dejair Bulgin had 10 rebounds and eight steals.
Five players, led by Craig Dorman’s 31 points, scored in double digits for Catherine Hall. Dwayne Johns scored 21 points, Vaughn Corke and Kurt Dorman both scored 14 points, while Goyan Malcolm scored 11 points.
Michael Johnson scored a game-high 36 points for Holland Saints, Aldane Anderson scored 20 points, while Ricardo Brooks scored 19 points.
In the other game, a big second quarter tilted the scales in Lucea’s favour as they won their fifth game against 14 losses.
The first quarter ended 9-9, but Lucea outscored Avalanche 20-8 in the second half to lead by 12 points 29-17 at half-time; they held the same lead through to the end of the third quarter which was tied at 14-14, while Lucea had the edge 13-10 in the fourth quarter.
Julian Walker scored 16 points to lead Lucea with three players — Courtney Allen, Jvon Calderon and Sheldon Myrie — all scored 10 points each.
Dovial Smith’s 14 points led Avalanche while Jayvon Dorman scored 10 points in support.
