Description
"Grandson. Hiding like a nervous hermit crab. Interesting choice. One I should have expected, though, from such a little dragonet with such a limited imagination. You may be wondering why you're still alive, especially when your entire family is dead. You know I could easily kill you from a distance. It would barely take a thought. But you've seen such a thorn in my side these last few years. So, no, I couldn't dispose of you from afar. That wouldn't be satisfying at all. I want to see your face as you die."
That's what Albatross said to his grandson Fathom in Tui Sutherland's terrific Wings of Fire novel Darkstalker. Since this mad SeaWing went full-blown Jack Torrance on his family during what is known as the SeaWing Massacre, I studied Kubrick's Shining movie to get the brows and eyes right.
His head and neck frills are made of UV resin colored with alcohol inks. The body is cosclay. This is the first sculpt I ever used an airbrush on. The lights are x-mas lights wrapped with twine to hide the wires. The lamps are paper mache formed from balloons. The flames are glue gun ammo that were poured into silicone rubber fire shapes and painted with acrylic paint. LED lights shine under the flames.
Despite the terrible things Albatross did in the book, I feel a bit of pity for him. He was an Animus dragon, but his Animus magic didn't get him anything but used and abused at the hands of his sister, Queen Lagoon.
He finally snapped and, well, you can see what he turned into.
