UWI regrets ‘untimely’ passing of students
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies, Mona says it has noted with “sadness and regret the untimely passing” of two of its students on Wednesday.
Twenty- two-year-old Shanise Simmond, a resident of Rex Nettleford Hall and a final year student in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, and 23-year-old O’Shane Reid, a postgraduate student in the Master of Arts Communication Studies Programme, died as a result of injuries they sustained when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with an oncoming Toyota Coaster bus on the Drax Hall main road in the parish.
UWI said both were student workers in the Sports Unit, Office of Student Services and Development.
“The university community commiserates with the families and friends of these students in their time of loss and hopes that they will find the necessary strength to cope in the days ahead,” UWI said in a statement Thursday.
